8/27/00 Faith is the Cure

Us again with the latest.

Before going to Greenville to the Evangelical Institute last Wednesday, Marcy told me she didn't think we needed to go. That she has prayed to God for comfort and He has already given it - she feels better, no pain and a reversal of symptoms. I suggested we go anyway and tell the evangelists just that.

Just like the woman who touched His cloak in Matthew 9:20 (and Mark 5:25 and Luke 8:43,) Marcy has taken some of His power and is healed.

Our Greenville trip was truly miraculous. We met with a gifted, spirit-filled 81 year old man, Joseph Carroll, who helped us move farther down the road in our walk with Christ. Though we only prayed for God's will to be done, we all left believing that it is not God's will to take Marcy at this time in her life. If you would like to read Mr. Carroll's book, "How to Worship Jesus Christ," let me know and I will give you a copy.

You may never hear of him otherwise. He is so led by God, he doesn't even have a sign on the road to draw people - people are led to him. (Someone so down on advertising could be bad for my business, but that's another discussion.) Suffice to say Mr. Carroll does not do what he does for money.

The trip also brought us closer to my parents and I think opened the door for many good times to come.
Marcy also considered returning the wet cell device (used by the ALS survivor / author of "Hope Springs Eternal") that hadn't even arrived yet. Now that it has arrived, we have decided to keep that and give it a try. We should begin those treatments this coming week.

She continues to show remarkable improvement. Last week she couldn't lift her right leg high enough to put on clothes. Saturday she showed me she could raise her right knee higher than her waist. I can't do that!

She also told me (after the fact) that last week she couldn't play piano because her hands were too cramped. Thursday night she played for friends and she's never played for non-family members. (I can't do that, either.)

We are now scheduled for the NC doctors September 26 and 27. It's still possible they'll call us earlier. We're also scheduled for doctors in WI the end of October, but we may cancel that if we're happy with NC.

We have drifted a little from our diet. Marcy needs the protein that is omitted from the purists' macrobiotics diet. But we continue to eat very healthy - and neither of us were slobs before.

The kids seem OK. They have adjusted their dinner and bedtime prayers to include a get well request, but other than that, it rarely comes up.

That's the best way to handle it when talking with Marcy as well. It's best not to ask her how she's feeling or if she slept OK last night. She's not keeping a daily scorecard and surely doesn't want anyone else keeping one. She stays focused on the positive. She'll tell you the parts she wants when she wants.

So many good things have already come from fighting this disease, that it's impossible to list them all. But here are a few - it has:

  • strengthened our faith - at church today (Sunday) Marcy rededicated her life to Christ
  • reminded both of us about what is really important
  • brought us closer to friends and closer to both our parents
  • given us a stronger desire to help other people
  • showed us how strong and compassionate our friends are as they help (or, more accurately, "do") both our jobs for now
When Marcy eventually is declared/discovered not to have ALS, some will say it was the diet, some will say it was the supplements, fewer will say it was Joseph Carroll, many will say she never had it.

I know we will always believe it was her faith in God and the work that He has planned for her in the future.

Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

Rob
