10/8/05 Toxic Mold?

If you have been reading our daily updates much of this email will be old news to you. (If you don't have a password or lost yours, just email me.)

Marcy tested positive and tried the IV antibiotic protocol from Texas that is helping others diagnosed with neurological disfunctions including ALS for 6 weeks. It didn't help and may have weakened her to allow a lung infection from which she is just now Recuperating.

Monday 10/3 Dr. Croft called from Wisconsin. Marcy's test for Stachybotrys (black mold toxicity) came back positive and very high - Marcy was at 13, the norm for sickness is 4 or 5, people die at 18. This high a reading is usually found only when the patient is constantly exposed to very highly concentrated, visible mold in his/her environment. The doctor is very curious as to why no one else in the house is sick and asked Darcy and me (the youngest and oldest) to send him urine samples on ourselves.

Dr. Croft's work shows that exposure to black mold in the environment deposits toxins in the body that accumulate over time but are not live in the body. Dr. Reid suggests (and this makes more sense to me and Marcy) that there is a fungus living in her that is throwing off toxins. Marcy has been taking an antifungal (called Vfend) since May that seems to help her feel better and may be the reason her Porphyria indicators have improved. The Vfend may be killing a fungus that is toxic to Marcy.

Dr. Reid is consulting with specialists in this field to determine next steps. Dr. Reid is thinking of putting Marcy in the hospital for 5 days to administer Amphotericin, a very strong IV antifungal. Dr. Reid prescribed powdered charcoal and Metamucil to help carry toxins out of Marcy's GI tract. We are very encouraged by these findings and ready to try treatment.

She started taking IGF-1 (growth hormone) this week to see if that will rebuild muscle mass and help her. Our specific prayer request for this mailing is for wisdom in finding the key to start Marcy's physical breakthrough.

We are still blessed to be receiving dinners from friends and Marcy is still watching the Food Channel! Her favorite recipe that we haven't tried is Chicken and Dumplings. And we have added our current favorite restaurant - Blue Cactus - to our page for out of town friends who want to order out for us.

In our last email, we asked for help with back to school clothes for Darcy. We received a huge outpouring of love from this request: cash, gift cards, and clothes. This is Darcy in one of her favorite outfits. This was the topic of my 8/5/05 column.
Darcy finished her cake decorating classes with "the Cake Lady" this summer. This was her most difficult cake - complete with roses.
Darcy and I were blessed to go to Indianapolis in August - to go to my son Troy's wedding in August. Shown here (left to right) are Debbie, Carrie, Troy, Darcy, and me. Troy is now on full scholarship at the University of Cincinnati for his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice.

The Mulligans for Marcy golf tournament 9/22 was a huge success. Marcy, Cricket, and me got to go to the course and meet many of the volunteers and benefactors.

The work of all these friends generated over twice the donations of any prior fundraiser for us.

Marcy's Aunt Elinore died 8/13 and the family asked if Matt would like her car: a 1989 Fleetwood Cadillac.

Our friend Garland flew to Long Island, NY, and drove the car home for us. See my 9/30 column for the whole story.
Matt and Darcy feel right at home in the Cadillac, and so do all of Matt's friends.
Yesterday we went to pick up Marcy's revamped power wheelchair. She can now drive it herself using her thumb and the black box you see above her right hand.
Though a little blurry - she was driving very quickly by me here - you can still see her smile. She loves having a little of her freedom back. Of course, Cricket is just happy to be with her.
We were able to get Marcy to stop long enough for this picture of some of the group from Clover Bottom who made this happen. Left to right behind Marcy are Mark, Brian, and Deb.
Our friend, Nan, is still selling her "Marcy's Hope" bracelet as a fundraiser for Marcy. Click here to learn more.

Marcy continues to receive lots of prayer requests, but she can handle more. Just email or call me and I'll add your prayer request to Marcy's computer.

We continue to thank God each and every day for your prayer and care.

Love.
